I was most ecstatic to read Alexandra Christo’s debut To Kill a Kingdom that has a The Little Mermaid flair to it, though this is not your ordinary retelling, more that the fairy tale was a base for this story! This story was truly unique and enthralling! It pretty much held me spellbound throughout because everything is not what you would expect from this story!įirst off, our heroine, Lira-note that spelling there, look familiar?-is not a mermaid, but a siren. Give it a try if you are a fan of adventure, romance and Lira. I put that down mostly to Lira and very good pacing. In spite of all this, I immensely enjoyed this book. It might be nitpicking but it did take me out of the story. There were a few inconstiencies in the story, specially at the start. I think the point of calling them 'pirates' was so that they sound cool. ![]() They never do anything pirate like at all. It also relies that we are familiar enough with classic fairy tales to fill in the holes. The world building was quite lazy, relying on a great deal of suspension of disbelief on the part of the reader. There is so much I can say here.įirst the secondary characters, they were all one dimensional. It's been a while since I've found a book this entertaining.Īt least give the sample a try. I struggled put this book down and lost quite a few hours of sleep reading this book. She had some amazing character development and it was a joy to follow her on her journey.
